VR is Like Superheroes: “With great Power comes great Responsibility”

by Vito Ferrero, Architect-Designer/vr-immersive.com

For the ones that are superhero fans, virtual reality may be just another superpower. And it is indeed. The ability to immerse others in your self-created world and convince them that things are possible, imaginable and even tangible, has never been greater. VR technology is developing fast enough to make us feel the pressure of a new zeitgeist that apparently moves in two opposite directions. On the surface the need for illusions, to alleviate the pain of absurd life situations, frustrations, the crumbling and shifting sands of worn out social systems that lead us to evasion, drugs and all kinds of meaningless entertainment. But on the other hand, beneath the surface, I sense that a great amount of people is searching new life paths, more personal, more fulfilling and coherent with their abilities and passions. So, as with any other great power, when VR is put into our hands it comes with a tag that says “great responsibility”. It comes with the potential choice of being truly creative, truly innovative and constructive.  As Abraham Maslow would put it, it could be a tool for self-actualization. We often see crap movies with huge budgets making epic FX sequences that last almost all the two hours. But when the movie ends people could say: Did you understand what was going on?  In some cases, senseless characters, devoid of real interest, poor performances and lack of story sentence the movie to failure. So, for design it can be the same, if we do not keep up our conceptual level to the opportunities given. Sometimes we need to turn back to the basics of life, learn to read and write, then create a compelling story and then, only then it will deserve to have some epic sequences hopefully expressed with taste and a sense of balance.

VR can be abused, used for frivolous things, like simply boasting the possession and usage of technology  devoid of meaningful content. Also it can be used to enslave the mind, and to transmit negative content -but hey, sacred is free will, and we must respect it- . Nevertheless VR can also be used for learning, for development, for problem solving, for sharing, communicating, collaborating, and for the healthy enjoyment of life. So… what kind of Superhero would YOU choose to BE given THAT superpower? VF.

The Design World Will Gain Spectrum, Connectivity and Maturity with VR Technology

by Vito Ferrero, Architect-Designer/vr-immersive.com

The impression that architecture and design is progressively going into an “effect driven” industry or as a “mediatic art” is to me, not a sign of degradation of the discipline but only a logical and transient stage in the maturity process of a global culture that now has these wonderful new tools to express itself. This proliferation of images, spectacular buildings, vehicles, outrageous forms that amuse the eye is perfectly natural when not long ago we were bound to the limits of 2D representation through ink and paper or to the slow and full of sacrifice world of unassisted craftsmanship. 3D technology including 3D printing and VR technologies, have a liberating effect that also has its growing pains in the competitive mind, but on the other hand, enhances the potential for collaboration and problem solving in graceful ways, like in no other time in history. We are indeed very lucky to be living in a time were such flourishment of opportunity is expanding.

Digital resources as VR can expand our capabilities as designers, to attract and convince clients, to better inform and coordinate with developers and entrepreneurs. Innovation in the application of this technology is on its verge and anyone with enough vision can sense we are on the top of the wave to make bold moves to promote research and development in any possible VR application.

Back in time, the development of CAD and BIM software expanded the paradigms of design when they came. In parallel, 3D and render apps expanded the paradigm much more. So now we find that 2D plans are not enough to convey the complex ideas of generative architecture, freeform surfaces and other interesting and complex manifestations, relatively new expressions of architectural art nowadays.

But even for the convenience, practicality, speed and ease that VR technology has to communicate design ideas, especially in architecture and industrial design, its  applications take hold on more conventional, not-so-spectacular architecture as well, and can be oriented at the market of real estate and tourism as well passing through interior design and decoration.

The meaning of the word architecture is broadening, to an art-less rigid, more interconnected and interpenetrated with other disciplines, like plastic art, sculpture, product and service development, sustainability, energy, invention, business, or even high-tech engineering.

Also on a technical level the potential is tremendous. The use of virtual conference rooms, where avatars of distant people can meet over the internet and discuss about modifications of complex 3D models, part assemblies, project management, timing, costs and implications of different options and also communication with clients, potentially gives a flexibility unsurpassed in any other time of history. Also the effectiveness of consultations, coordination, explanation and approval of projects can speed up the curve of completion to a great extent.

The cost of these technologies also is going to be progressively affordable, coming in a wide range and variety.

It’s only a matter of time for all the pieces to take place and interlock, realizing all these applications and more. And to foresee, and then learn and implement this opportunities is going to be a key to success in the future of design and industry. VF.

Opportunities of VR

by Vito Ferrero Architect-Designer/vr-immersive.com
Envision yourself in your new office. It has a wonderful view over the financial district and you can see ships in the harbor, some helicopters passing by from time to time…  The traffic far down the 40th floor doesn't bother much. The telephone rings and your secretary reminds you about a meeting  in 15 minutes with the board of directors and some foreign advisors…

Waiting for that moment you relax and gaze upon the façade of your company’s new building. The green facade and sun seeking solar panels remind you how your building is making you money while you sell energy to the grid. The nature of ambience sound reflects the silence provided by the noble materials that surround you. Yes, sounds great for a CEO but hey… The building is not built yet! You realize it is in plans over your architect’s desk. The site is on works and the previous old buildings are just being demolished. You have just realized you are wearing and Oculus Rift (or HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard), the VR device that lets you tap into these convincing sensations.

But beyond what can be seen....
Does the building stand for the values of the company?
Does it really convey the image and meaning of the services you provide, in which you believe?
How do you feel sitting there, walking there?

This is how Virtual Reality can help you stay connected with your future goals and dreams. So with VR the word Vision, is added a new dimension, and a new instrument. Those sensations and emotions you feel while immersed in the close future can be the fuel to keep you navigating on course. Virtual Reality can be an instrument not only to change the color of a wall, but to really feel what is like to live in a favorable future for a moment and send those beneficial signs to the universe.

Signs of progress, growth and why not…  Pleasure and adventure…

Consciousness Propelled by Virtual Reality

by Vito Ferrero Architect-Designer/vr-immersive.com

Life has its stages, as well as culture and civilization. To me, the advent of virtual reality (VR) technologies will propel the living and reliving of experience stages, from being fed up with superficiality, to gain dominion over certain internal forces such as emotions and overactive mind activity. VR can accelerate experience to such extent that humans can awake sooner to more deep and meaningful stages of experience in their reality. This -potentially- can bring much joy and freedom to people, much opportunity to share and communicate between themselves and to share ideas and experiences. The amount of information that can be received and-or given through VR experiences far exceeds the capabilities of mere language and abstraction. As our company is named after, it´s immersive.

The fact that often people are left speechless has to do with the fact that the experience of VR immersion is beyond words, beyond description. Thats the potential to engage into human emotions as well as sharing knowledge through a hopefully engaging, joyful, deep and well intended virtual experience. In fact it could be more real than you think. That is why I foresee that in the end, Virtual Reality as a resource, be it in the arts, in business, and in any other area of human life, will propel human consciousness as whole in the XXI Century.

How do you feel about virtual reality? Where do you see its impact?

The VR Era is Here

by Vito Ferrero, Architect-Designer/vr-immersive.com

The use of Computer Generated content in every industry  indicates we are in a digital age revolution. We see it in every field and more and more the boundaries between disciplines are dissolving into a single vital organism through the internet. In a sense we already have been working in a virtual reality since computers came to our homes and offices. We tap into virtual objects that appear to be buttons, we see through virtual windows and watch virtual faces telling stories through YouTube.

Could it get more virtual?

The touch technologydeepens our illusion that those moving and dancing 2D objects are there but people don't usually talk about how virtual it is already. The fact that all abstraction, -including reading an old fashioned book- is virtual reality can be a very philosophical matter. The mere character appearing in screen pixels, is virtual appearance. The letter is not there: It appears to be there. But even when you have ink on paper, the sound represented is not there, it is in your head. So in the screen we got what they call:Virtual ink. Nevertheless the advent of bigger and faster hardware lead us to the viability of more immersive and intensive technology. The term Virtual Realitywhich is the immersion through interactive audio and visual technology, is then a consequence. The representation of objects and environments in a way so exact, so vivid, that resembles reality to an extent that almost completely tricks the senses.

In our busy lives, we do not often take the time to deeply think about implications and consequences of technology use. The fact that tech it is progressively easier and easier to use, seamless and accessible -as it should- put us as a global culture in front of ourselves. Our power of representation has increased, so our responsibility and maturity as a species is currently under a naturally accelerated curve of development, beyond this kind of cultural adolescence.

But hey, since Guttemberg, is that so new?

I personally see technology as liberating, fascinating and as a profound game changer. Instead of being fearful that big brother or a dreadful all seeing eyewill enslave humankind in a dreamlike world, I prefer to envision a world were incredible power is given to us, to free ourselves from meaningless efforts and concentrate on what really matters. Things like beauty, sharing, living fully can be the result of the good use of technology. Making a better world -In the realm of architecture and design as in any other- starts with a plan, and what better than testing the result first in Virtual Reality to see if it works?

What do YOU think?

Virtual Reality in Tourism - the TUI Group

Virtual Reality in Tourism - the TUI Group

Under the title "TUI - how to build a power brand" Erik Friemuth, Chief Marketing Officer of the world's leading tourism company, lectured on 01/28/2015 on the rebranding of TUI Group. The event was organized by the Marketing-Club Dusseldorf e.V. #MCD, at McKinsey & Company in Düsseldorf, Germany. VR-Immersive.com was there!

Coming from the telecom industry, Erik Friemuth described the challenges he faced as part of his career change. TUI Group possessed 2 years ago, when he began to manage the marketing of the company, more than 250 brands, was and is leader in a number of European markets (Logo recognition over 70%), e.g. Germany, Scandinavia, Holland, Belgium and Great Britain. In Germany, TUI is even better known compared to brands such as Apple, Starbucks or Mercedes Benz. Due to his former activities as a marketing manager at Vodafone, Mr. Friemuth brought plenty of rebranding experience onboard TUI.

PICT_20150913_195624.JPGAt TUI he faced some obstacles, especially of a financial nature, when he joined the Group. In any case, he could by means of thoughtful, well planned steps (eg. Rebranding rollout, with the slogan, "Discover your smile", began as a test in the Netherlands) gain valuable experience, and significantly reduce the cost of the rebranding through early advertising placements. This helped TUI when further rolling out the rebranding in other countries, squeezing advertising costs by about 50% (in Spain, their airport ads were highly successful in creating corporate identity and were later emulated at other tourist destinations). The Netherlands are characterized, among other things, by an established online market in holiday bookings in contrast to Germany, where around 80% of all holiday trips are still handled by “brick-and-mortar” branches.

As an integrated vacation/tour operator, TUI offers several advantages over competitors, or even separate flight and accommodation bookings a traveler might realize. Reservations can be booked offline or online (mobile as well as PC) directly and indirectly with TUI; travelers are transported in TUI buses, airplanes and cruise ships to their holidays and accommodated by local staff at destination in TUI lodging, ie. the whole value chain is controlled by the company. The advantages are much closer customer relationships, guaranteeing a coherent brand-specific quality, changes to bookings (e.g. hotel does not meet customer expectations) or ensure repatriations in an emergency (like last year in Tunisia by TUI UK), just to name a few. Intensive supervision allows the company to better meet customer demands. Individual TUI brands cover the increasingly more specific segments, from families to singles, young couples and retirees or activities-related travel, e.g., cruises, yachting/ sailing, canoeing or even snow-related experiences.

PICT_20150910_192517.JPGIn the virtual reality field, TUI has begun to equip individual stores with VR goggles. In the yacht charter business, VR content is highly successful.

VR content that is being shown through this new medium are primarily vacation destinations and hotel views. The company sees this as a marketing innovation, but we believe, based on a real booking example mentioned by Mr. Friemuth, and our vision of VR in tourism, that the potential has not yet been fully exploited. Virtual reality arouses feelings, just like leisure travel through your experiences. Unlike newcomers Airbnb or Booking.com, the assets are owned by TUI, who can therefore design their desired online presence. Hotels are indeed partially presented through 2D 360º videos (not necessarily VR!) on the Internet, but in fact, all TUI accommodations could use VR as a powerful sales weapon, depicting one room for each category available in the respective hotels, as well as presenting hotel facilities (eg. Lobby, restaurant, children's playground, gardens, pool area, beach, rooftop terrace …) letting 360º VR photos or videos come into full play and charming potential clients. Customers receive a comprehensive insight into the facilities, thereby avoiding the booking of accommodations that do not suit their tastes. Specifically, Mr. Friemuth mentioned the case of some friends, a family with kids, where the mother booked a family holiday with TUI. When the family arrived at the hotel, although it met the description in the brochure, the hotel did not fulfill the expected "look and feel", ie. due to the lacking "Feel Good" factor, the father asked TUI for a transfer to a different accommodation, where they would spend the 10 vacation days in a more "pleasant" environment. Within 2 hours, at an additional cost, the family was relocated to another TUI property. This is a service that neither Airbnb nor hotel portals offer. TUI has a positive, close customer care concept unlike some competitors. Nevertheless, tourism companies could avoid such situations, potential customer dissatisfaction (and negative feedback) and costs that arise, by implementing a targeted use of VR at the point-of-sale. Analogously, this argument applies to hotels in general, who wish to highlight their quality standards or seek to differentiate themselves further from competitors. The costs of producing VR content are relatively marginal - pictures and videos should be updated regularly anyway, instead of 2D you take 360º spherical photos and if you wish to offer customers a walk-through, then 3D 360º photos are possible. Such content can be efficiently managed centrally and locally, through our hardware and operating system-agnostic VR Content Management Platform.

In summary, we found the event very interesting, a great evening and can only recommend applying for membership at the Marketing-Club Düsseldorf e.V.

Our seventh article: VR: Much More Than Special Effects

Many, including myself initially, I must confess, think VR is something we have seen on the computer screen or related to special effects. Once you actually try own VR visors yourself, something we urge you to do, your notion about the technology will change completely. In our article “VR: Much More Than Special Effects”, Vito asserts, that “far from stealing timeless design principles,” this “tool” shall intensify discussion and thought capacity even outside the realm of designers. Think beyond architecture and real estate towards yachts and ships for example.

Our fifth article: VR is Like Superheroes:

In our new post on Spanish blog COSAS DE ARQUITECTOS, Vito compares VR to Superheroes (“VR is Like Superheroes: With great Power comes great Responsibility.”), suggesting that even though VR technology allows us to create great innovations, applicable to many different sectors, e.g. development, problem solving, sharing, communicating, and collaborating, amongst others, it depends on the users to generate some of value. An object may look extremely appealing on VR, but if later, the reality turns out to be completely different, VR is selling empty promises. What do you think?

Was halten Sie davon?

Our fourth article: The world will gain spectrum design, connectivity and maturity with Virtual Reality technologies

Gracias!

Collaborative work and resolution, expanding possibilities as designers, more effectively attract and convince customers, better inform and coordinate with real estate developers, engineers and entrepreneurs, 2D drawings are insufficient to communicate complex ideas .... virtual reality applications are many and Vito tries to summarize them in our new weekly blog post on Spanish blog COSAS DE ARQUITECTOS, in the article titled "The world will gain spectrum design, connectivity and maturity with Virtual Reality technologies." Please share if you believe the information is useful. Thank you!

Our third article: TAKING ADVANTAGE OF VIRTUAL REALITY?

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF VIRTUAL REALITY
The building is still not built yet but you already inspecting it using your virtual reality goggles, assessing whether the design is optimal, appreciating the details. The actual plans only exist on your architect´s desk. You imbue yourself and ask if the building truly expresses the values and image of the company. Virtual reality is not just a tool that lets you make design changes but feel and live it. Read the new weekly post on the Spanish blog COSAS DE ARQUITECTOS, “Taking Advantage of Virtual Reality.”
